Volta Acceptable Use Policy

1. Scope

This Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") sets out the activities that are not permitted on Volta's products and services (the "Services"). It applies to all customers, end users and anyone accessing the Services.

This AUP forms part of the Master Services Agreement between Volta and its customers. Customers are responsible for ensuring their end users comply with this AUP.

2. Prohibited content

You may not use the Services to host, store, transmit, distribute or facilitate access to any content that:

  • Is unlawful in any jurisdiction where the content is hosted or accessed
  • Infringes the intellectual property rights of any third party
  • Constitutes child sexual abuse material (CSAM) - reporting obligations apply
  • Promotes, incites or facilitates terrorism, violent extremism or hate-based violence
  • Promotes, incites or facilitates self-harm, suicide or eating disorders
  • Constitutes harassment, threats, doxing or non-consensual intimate imagery
  • Is defamatory, libellous or maliciously false
  • Violates the privacy or publicity rights of any person

3. Prohibited conduct

You may not use the Services to:

  • Send spam or unsolicited bulk communications
  • Phishing, fraud, identity theft, scamming, market manipulation
  • Distribute malware, ransomware, viruses, worms, trojans or any harmful code
  • Operate command and control infrastructure for botnets or malicious networks
  • Carry out unauthorised access, scanning, probing or penetration testing against third party systems
  • Carry out denial-of-service attacks
  • Mine, abuse, exfiltrate or interfere with the personal data of any person
  • Interfere with or disrupt Volta's services, networks or infrastructure
  • Evade rate limits, abuse free tiers, or circumvent technical or contractual restrictions
  • Train or fine-tune AI models on content the customer does not have the right to use
  • Generate AI content that is deceptive, abusive, non-consensual or otherwise breaches the prohibited content list above
  • Use the Services to develop or deploy AI systems that are prohibited under applicable AI regulation (eg. EU AI Act Annex III prohibited practices) [LEGAL TEAM CONFIRM - AI-specific prohibitions should be tightened to map directly to the regulatory frameworks Volta is subject to]

4. Security requirements

When using the Services, you must:

  • Use strong, unique credentials and protect them from unauthorised access
  • Apply security patches and updates to your own software running on the Services in a timely manner
  • Configure the Services in line with Volta's published security guidance and the Shared Responsibility Model
  • Report security incidents affecting Volta-hosted resources to security@volta.com promptly
  • Not share access credentials with parties who are not authorised under your Master Services Agreement

5. Resource use

You may not:

  • Use the Services in a way that imposes an unreasonable load on Volta's infrastructure
  • Resell or sublicense the Services except as expressly permitted under your contract
  • Reverse-engineer the Services or attempt to extract the underlying technology
  • Use the Services to compete directly with Volta by replicating its services

6. AI-specific provisions

[LEGAL TEAM CONFIRM - this section is the most product-specific and needs careful drafting once the Volta service definition is locked. Draft starting points below:]

  • You may not use the Services to generate or distribute AI-generated content depicting real people without their consent
  • You may not use the Services to generate AI content designed to deceive, defame or harass
  • You may not use the Services in a way that breaches applicable AI safety or transparency requirements (eg. EU AI Act, Council of Europe Framework Convention, sectoral AI regulations)
  • Where required by applicable law, customers must implement transparency mechanisms (eg. watermarking, content provenance markers) for AI-generated content produced via the Services
  • Customers must comply with Volta's published Responsible AI guidance [LEGAL TEAM CONFIRM whether Volta will publish a separate Responsible AI policy]

7. Sanctions and export controls

You may not use the Services in violation of applicable sanctions or export control laws, including those administered by:

  • The UK Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI)
  • The EU
  • The US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS)
  • Any other applicable jurisdiction [LEGAL TEAM CONFIRM the territorial scope and sanctions regime Volta needs to comply with]

8. Reporting

To report a suspected violation of this AUP, contact abuse@volta.com.

We aim to acknowledge reports within [48 hours] and to take action proportionate to the severity of the violation.

9. Consequences of breach

If we determine that you have breached this AUP, we may, at our discretion:

  • Notify you and require remediation within a stated period
  • Suspend access to all or part of the Services
  • Terminate your account and the Master Services Agreement
  • Report the breach to law enforcement or regulators where required
  • Take any other action available to us under your contract or applicable law

For severe violations (eg. CSAM, ongoing attacks on Volta or third parties), we may take action without prior notice.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this AUP from time to time. We will notify customers of material changes through the Volta admin console and via email to account administrators.
